AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of bupropion in obese patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODOLOGY: In this 2-year, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, a total of 121 overweight bupropion xl 300 mg cost and obese patients with MDD (body mass index (BMI) 34.0-42.9 kg/m(2)) were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomized to receive either bupropion 200 mg/day or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was change in the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), which is a standardized score used to assess the severity of depression, at end the 2-year study period, or at the end of study if primary assessment was negative. Secondary outcome measures included changes in body weight, mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), LDL (LDL-C), HDL (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), blood pressure, and fasting glucose (fasting glucose). RESULTS: Bupropion was slightly more effective than placebo for a reduction in HAM-D scores at 2-year follow-up (mean difference, -5.8; bupropion xl 150 mg cost 95% confidence interval [CI], -9.8 to -2.6; p=0.002) and significantly more effective than bupropion at both 6-month follow-up and long-term (mean difference of -12.7; 95% CI, -18.9 to -4.9; p<0.001). For all secondary outcomes, the difference between bupropion and placebo was statistically significant (p<0.001).
